Hayao Miyazaki is a film director, screenwriter and a character designer. He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, an animation and production company. Miyazaki is widely known for directing children animated films such as Laputa, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Fireflies and many more. His animated films were unknown to the Western society, not until the release of Princess Mononoke (1997). His recent film, Spirited Away became very successful, thus being the first animated film to win an Academy Award.
Miyazaki creates dynamic characters that cannot be categorized easily as good or evil. Many hostile characters have extenuating features like Yubaba in Spirited Away. Miyazaki’s films unlike many other animated films does not reach a climax when evil is being triumph over but rather when a character reconciled. Miyazaki says, “The heroine [in Spirited Away] is thrown into a place where the good and bad dwell together…She manages not because she has destroyed the evil, but because she has acquired the ability to survive”
Miyazaki film is created with no fundamental base of script. He develops his story through storyboards and the production begins soon after. “We never know where the story will go but we just keep working on the film as it develops. It’s a dangerous way to make an animation film and I would like it to be different, but unfortunately, that’s the way I work and everyone else is kind of forced to subject themselves to it” quoted from Miyazaki in Midnight Eye interview.
